30 years of manufacturing for Malvern packaging firm

Bagging specialist Automated Packaging Systems is celebrating 30 years of manufacturing in the UK. Renowned for its range of flexible and reliable packaging systems and bags-on-a-roll, the company first opened its doors in 1984.

Designed, developed and built in the United States of America, the Autobag® system was an immediate success.  After 20 years growing the business in North America, Automated Packaging Systems targeted Europe from a base in the UK. “Our aim was to sell to industries where our system had already proven itself in the US, areas such as the automotive sector. Many were sceptical of the change from hand-bagging to automation but we convinced them with our service and support offering,” explains Peter Wylie, Managing Director of Automated Packaging Systems Europe.

Since 1984 Automated Packaging Systems has extended its range of bagging, void fill and protective packaging systems. Autobag®, AirPouch® and Side Pouch® systems are well known throughout Europe. Key to growth was its move to Malvern in 1996, and later a £2m extension in 2009. The extension added an additional 25,000 sq ft of manufacturing space.

“Having started with one machine and three staff, we now employ 125 at our European headquarters, in Malvern Worcestershire,” emphasises Mr Wylie.

“Over the years we’ve developed products that meet change in market demands, and we’ve done it without compromising our fundamental commitment to flexibility and reliability. Our GeoTech™ films, for example, reflect growing awareness of the need to reduce environmental impact, and our mail order fulfilment systems have enabled us to capture a share of the rapidly-growing online retail market.”

The company is continuing its expansion in to new markets, targeting applications where flexibility and reliability are key, Mr Wylie explains: “There is great potential for us in the food sector, and our new product development programme will target innovation in void-fill and protective packaging. It’s been a successful first 30 years; the next 30 will see us increase the reach and scale of our business, grow the range of systems and service we offer.”
